WhatsApp Bot
What Is the WhatsApp Bot?
The Spentrip bot lives in WhatsApp. Send it a photo of a receipt, a PDF, a voice message, or just type 18 EUR paella in Barcelona — the expense is created and filed into your trip. No switching apps, no waiting until the end of the day.
It's the fastest way to capture an expense while you're actually out spending: you're already in WhatsApp, so the receipt goes in before it ends up crumpled in a pocket.
Start a chat at spentrip.app/whatsapp — it opens WhatsApp on your phone, or shows a QR to scan if you're at a desktop. The bot's number is +1 555-970-2123 if you'd rather add it by hand. To link an existing account, open Settings → WhatsApp in the app.
Linking Your Account
Copy Your Code
Open Settings → WhatsApp in the app. Your unique code is on screen — tap to copy it.
Open WhatsApp
Tap Open WhatsApp to start a chat with the bot, or message the number by hand.
Send Your Code
Paste the code as your first message to the bot.
Done
The bot confirms the link. Start sending expenses right away.
Already chatting with the bot but haven't linked yet? Send /login and it will ask for the code.
What You Can Send
Four ways to log an expense, all in the same chat:
Plain Text
Type the expense however you'd say it. The AI pulls out the amount, currency, and merchant.
Receipt Photos
Snap the receipt and send it. The same OCR that powers in-app scanning reads it.
- JPG, PNG, WebP
- Merchant, amount, and date extracted
PDF Receipts
Forward the PDF invoices that hotels and airlines email you straight into the chat.
- PDF documents
- Share directly from your mail app
Voice Messages
Hold the mic and say it out loud. Useful when your hands are full of luggage.
Sending to the Right Trip
Expenses go to your default trip unless you say otherwise. Three ways to steer them:
- Set a default — send
/tripto pick which trip new expenses land in - Override per expense — add
#trip:Nameto send just that one elsewhere, like15 EUR pizza #trip:Rome2026 - Tag as you go — any other hashtag becomes a tag:
4 EUR coffee #business. Tags require a subscription
Commands
- /help — the full list, any time
- /stats — spending breakdown for the trip
- /trip — choose your default trip
- /signup and /login — create an account, or connect one you already have
- /install — a link to download the app
- /unlink — disconnect your number from your account
- /stop and /resume — opt out of marketing messages, or back in
Managing the Connection
Settings → WhatsApp shows the current state. Once linked, you'll find an Open WhatsApp button that jumps straight to the chat, the bot's number if you'd rather start the conversation yourself, and Unlink WhatsApp Account to disconnect. Unlinking asks for confirmation first, and you can relink later with a fresh code.
Tips & Details
You Can Start Before You Install
Message the bot without a Spentrip account and it will still log your expenses. When you're ready, send /signup and everything you've already sent comes with you.
Free Allowance
The WhatsApp channel includes 10 free receipts. That allowance is counted separately from the app and from the Telegram bot. After that, a subscription keeps them flowing.
Speaks Your Language
The bot replies in English, German, Spanish, French, Italian, Polish, Portuguese, and Russian, following the language of your phone.
Everything Syncs
Expenses sent over WhatsApp are ordinary expenses. Edit them in the app, add them to reports, share them with trip members — nothing about them is second-class.
One Number, One Account
A phone number links to a single Spentrip account. To move it to a different account, unlink first, then send the new account's code.
